Cianbro's Pittsfield Coating Team Earns SHARP Recognition
Representatives of the Maine Department of Labor joined Senior Cianbro Executives this week to congratulate the team members of Cianbro's Pittsfield Coating Shop for earning the government's SHARP (Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program) award.
The SHARP Program offers incentives to private sector employers who take a proactive approach to workplace safety. The SHARP certificate is granted to employers who have demonstrated exemplary achievements in workplace safety and health. In order to qualify, employers receive a comprehensive safety and health consultation visit, correct all workplace safety and health hazards, adopt and implement effective safety and health management systems, and agree to request further consultative visits if major changes in working conditions or processes occur that may introduce new hazards. Employers meeting these specific program requirements may be exempt from general scheduled OSHA inspections for the duration of the recognition.
The last injury at the Pittsfield coating facility that was significant enough to be recorded by OSHA took place three and a half years ago. The coating team now joins the steel fabrication units of Cianbro Fabrication and Coating Corporation, in both Pittsfield and Baltimore, as recipients of the coveted SHARP safety recognition.
In a statement to the team members who earned the SHARP award, Cianbro CEO Pete Vigue said, "When we make a mistake, we put our cards on the table and we learn from it, and we share it with everyone in the organization and outside of the organization so that we can get better and we can improve. So it's important to communicate, be open-minded, acknowledge our mistakes, have a little fun along the way -- but understand that today is a new day, and every single one of us can impact the outcome and help us to achieve success."
Labor Department Deputy Director Steven Greeley told Cianbro's team that the safety work had just begun, since the certification must be renewed in two years. "So congratulations," he said, "but there's more work ahead."
Cianbro Fabrication & Coating Corporation is the fabrication and coating subsidiary of the Cianbro Companies. For over 40 years, Cianbro Fabrication & Coating Corporation has specialized in turn-key, value-added fabrication and coatings services to clients throughout North America. "It's long been a proven fact that the quality of our product is on the level of any of the top steel fabricators in the nation," said CFCC Vice President Jack Klimp. "Now with SHARP recognition earned by all of our teams in Pittsfield and Baltimore, we can truthfully say that our safety programs are also as good as any in the nation."
